First 5K In The Books

Well, it’s done.

I got up at 5:30 am, had a small breakfast of muffin tops and coffee. Left my house at 6:30 to drive to Teterboro Airport in NJ (about 45 minutes away).

Met up with my friend Joyce and two of her friends and waited until the race was ready to begin. Gun time was set for 8:30

All told there were between 850 and 900 people at this 5K. We started close to the front (but not too close).

Gun time.

The first mile I was running much faster than I normally do. This was the first time I ran without my music so I could not pace myself well. According to the race clock, my pace during the first mile was about 8:50 minutes per mile. I am usually at just around 10. So this explained why I was feeling tired earlier than usual.

The second mile I slowed a bit, but still faster than normal – 9:40 pace.

After the second water station, with only the final mile to go, I had to switch to a fast walking pace. The heat on the runway way hotter than I am used to…

So with the walking/running mix, my last mile pace was at 10:50. My overall race pace was 9:46, so I still ended up a little better than my average.

Here are my official results:
